A Glimpse into the History

The name "Topaz" is believed to be derived from the Greek Τοπάζιος (Topázios) or Τοπάζιον (Topázion), which is the ancient name of St. John's Island in the Red Sea.

Interestingly, the stone that was mined there in ancient times was not topaz but probably chrysolite: yellowish olivine.

The name topaz was first applied to the mineral we know today by that name in 1737. It's fascinating how a misnomer became universally accepted and is now a part of gemstone history!

The Epoch of Topaz Popularity

During the Middle Ages, topaz was a symbol of mental prowess and was believed to enhance mental powers. It was also thought to cure lunacy and protect travelers from danger.

The ancient Romans and even during medieval times, people believed that topaz had the power to ward off evil and enhance one’s mental capabilities.

It was also thought to increase body heat, thereby helping to ward off colds and fevers.

A Perfect Pairing

Topaz, with its varied hues and crystal clear transparency, pairs beautifully with almost any gemstone.

However, its elegance is particularly heightened when paired with diamonds, as the clarity and sparkle of diamonds complement the rich colors of topaz, creating a stunning visual spectacle.

The golden brown or vibrant blue of topaz juxtaposed with the clear, sparkling diamond creates a visual symphony, making it a perfect pairing for any jewelry piece.

Topaz, a gem of not just physical beauty but also enriched with historical and cultural significance, stands out as a symbol of strength, clarity, and resilience.

Whether it's warding off evil, enhancing mental capabilities, or simply being a piece that adds elegance to your jewelry collection, topaz has proven itself to be a gemstone that is not only a visual delight but also a bearer of positive and protective energies.
